LO5: Evaluation

LO5: Evaluation Of The Games Corner Website

Fit For Purpose

My website is fit for purpose. This is because is provided suitable promotional material for The Games Corner featuring two full episodes, all reviews, competitions, vlogs and other content that provides a detailed insight into The Games Corner. These features are conventional features found in typical magazine shows, though since this is a games show the content is similar to that of a reviewing website such as IGN. The style of the website follows the designs implemented in the TV episodes. Which according to the test plan 100% of testers said the main colour used on all pages is green; which is the intended colour.

Suitability Of Content

The content of the website is suitable because it features all content used in the TV show and more. The content includes typical magazine show content for example a news section. The content however since this is a games show the content is similar to that of reviewing websites and more online based media.

Content of the website is very reliant on videos. Embedded videos are a suitable format of presenting information to all ages. It provides both a visual and audio form of information that takes up less space on a webpage and can convey more information. According to feedback it was commented on over half of the test plans that the Flash Player is out of date on certain browsers. This is not a fault in the website and is a fault of the Flash Player; because of this an improvement is to make sure that the browsers used have updated flash players so that users can stream video content on the website.

Ease Of Navigation

My website has easy navigation since it features a navigation bar which is located underneath the logo in the top half of the page. This provides 95% of the navigation for the website. Hyperlinks that take less of a priority are located on individual pages that can be found by using the navigation bar, for example the Discover Icon located on the presenter profile page.

The homepage features the majority of content, it also provides various indication to find other content on the website. An example of this are the three icons located underneath the navigation bar. These icons feature a title and a brief description that provide that indication. "Discover the world of video games here at The Games Corner. Check out our reviews for more."

There are post graphics located on both the homepage and post-page that are linked to individual post this can be identified by the graphics design featuring a photo a black box and text within it; click here is a line featured in that box.

External hyperlinks are also featured on the website. Users can use the social media icons to follow a direct hyperlink to pages such as Facebook and YouTube. Discover Icons are located on the presenter profile page that link to pages that relate to each presenter so that the user can discover more. These features all provide easier navigation that is quicker and more comprehensible. According to feedback 100% of tester said that they could distinguish hyperlinks on the website and could understand the graphics used.

Aesthetic Quality

My design has aesthetic quality because the websites design is a minimalistic approach. It features a base colour of green against white text. This follows the design used in the TV episodes. The minimalistic design allows the layout to be basic, meaning it is more comprehensible. Minimalistic website design is a trending feature, since my design follows this trend the website has a more professional look.

Graphics featured in the website have a distinct style. Black was specifically chosen to stand out against the text and the majority of images. Though the style is basic it provides an effective design that gives a high quality aesthetic appeal.

Areas For Potential Improvement

Based on the feedback from the testing plans feedback was very positive. All questions were answered positively across all plans. The only issues found within the test was the websites functionality on multiple browsers. On some browsers the flash player was out of date; though as previously mentioned this is an issues with the flash player and in some cases and outdated browser. To improve on this I would make sure that the browser is updated and has the latest version of flash.

To make my website more fit for purpose I would create a system that allows the user that maintains the website to create posts on the website without having to create a new page and link it up with website. This system means that the website would be able to maintained by a user at The Games Corner without having knowledge of HTML5 coding. This would make my website more fit for purpose as it could be updated without my assistance, the website can then function like other mainstream gaming news sites making it fit for purpose. This would also improve the suitability of the content meaning the website has more content/updated news, this then achieves the purpose of The Games Corner providing games news/content.

To improve navigation I would include more graphics that would tell the user exactly were everything is. Though I have many hints and indications some some are not direct instructions; for example "click here". Though some users may miss this hints. Another improvements for navigation would be subtle. I would make sure that the mouse changes to the pointing finger icon on all hyperlinks, this icon features on some hyperlinks and not all, this change is subtle but confirms to the user that this is a hyperlink and can be clicked on. Though 100% of tester said that they could distinguish hyperlinks on the website and could understand the graphics used.

Another issue was in the layout/design. Across different platforms there were breaks between sections and asides that would leave a gap, this meant the grey wrapper was visible through the green. Though this is not an issue on the browser and operation system I designed it on (Google Chrome on Windows) some browsers have gaps that are bigger and feature in different places. This is an issues with how code is translated differently. This would be an area I would improve upon and would improve aesthetic quality giving the website an overall more polished and professional look.
